Autumn is one of those seasons when you don’t really know when it begins or ends. You just know when it’s the middle of autumn with the piles of dry leaves around London and the crispy air. Not quite cold enough for the hat and scarf, but not quite warm enough to forgo the coat.
Winter on the other hand (we Brits do love to talk about the weather) does love to announce its arrival. Bring on the freezing cold wind, snuggling up in your poncho coat with those knee high boots.
Yup, it’s hot chocolate-weather.
In my quest to eat and drink healthier, I decided to banish the hot chocolate and find another hot drink that would equally warm me up and help me drift off to sleep. I found a drink that sounded interesting and is full of so many benefits; hot tumeric milk.
I decided to busy myself in the kitchen and experiment with different varieties as hot milk with tumeric alone tasted a little bit too bitter for my liking. I wanted something quick and easy but also something healthy and slightly sweet.
It’s as easy and quick as making hot chocolate but is so much better for you. The tumeric will help with colds or flus and overall the drink is great for your body, skin and hair. It even makes a good detox drink. Each ingredient in this drink is full of benefits, so you can imagine how good this is when all mixed together!
So let’s get down to business.
You need:
1 cup of milk
1/2 teaspoon of cinnamon
1/4 teaspoon of tumeric powder
1/2 teaspoon coconut oil
Honey
Boil your milk. I use almond or soya milk, but you can use dairy milk if you want. Then add the coconut oil. It doesn’t matter if it’s solid, just mix it in until there’s no lumps in the milk.
Then add the tumeric powder. Be careful with it. It might not look it, but it can be a nightmare to remove stains left on kitchen surfaces or clothes. The pressure is on for the steady hand!
Stir!
Add the cardamon. Add more if, like me, you’re obsessed with it (cardamon is my favourite winter spice).
Stir!
Add honey. Stir and taste. If you want it a little bit less bitter and a little bit sweeter, add more honey ro your taste. If you’re using Manuka honey, 1/4 teaspoon should be fine as that’s quite a strong and powerful honey and a little can go a long way.
Pour it into your cup, sprinkle a dash of cardamon on top and that that is literally it. Finito. All done!
Snuggle up in bed with it if you like.
I love this drink. It brings a little extra sunshine in this cold weather and really does help to soothe.
